In the $2 billion dollar North American shampoo industry, the more natural you can make a product appear, the better it is likely to sell. Unfortunately, this has led to many misleading claims. Shampoo manufacturers often use wording such as natural, organic, or botanical which implies that the products contain no toxins or petrochemicals. The truth, however, is that many of these plant extracts are synthesized with toxic chemicals such as ethylene oxide, propyalcohol, nitrates, dioxane and formaldehyde. Dioxane, for example, is an internationally recognized carcinogen while ethylene oxide is linked to breast cancer.
